South Fork of the Snake River Fishing Report 5/29/2025

South Fork of the Snake River Brown Trout

Did we skip Spring altogether?
It sure feels like we jumped straight into Summer! If you’re a fan of warm weather, now’s the time to get out on the South Fork. Spring is forecasted to make a comeback next week, and as any Idahoan knows, Spring here can feel a lot like Winter.

Right now, the forecast for Irwin shows a high of 82°F on Saturday—that’ll thaw out winter-chilled bones for both humans and fish alike. Flows out of Palisades Reservoir have increased to 11,000 cfs, which is about where we were at this time last year, and still a few thousand cfs below the seasonal average. Water clarity is excellent for this time of year.

As we head toward early summer, all eyes turn to water temperatures. Our first good dry fly fishing of the season usually kicks in when temps hit around 54°F. Currently, the water temp at the lodge is 45°F. (You can monitor it here thanks to the Henry’s Fork Foundation.)

We’re still 2–3 weeks away from seeing Sallies, Green Drakes, and Salmonflies, but in the meantime, fishing is improving every day. Fish are beginning to move out of their winter haunts and into their more “summery” lies, feeding on a mix of nymphs, worms, eggs, and streamers.
