River Conditions
Flows out of Palisades Dam have dropped to 11,250 cfs, down from 12,000 cfs on Monday — and that’s good news. Dropping flows and excellent water clarity are exactly the conditions that set the table for the South Fork’s most iconic hatches, and the timing couldn’t be better.
The Word From Our Guides
We are on the cusp of something special here on the South Fork. Green Drakes, Salmon Flies, and PMDs are all queued up and ready to go, and the next 6–10 days things are really going to kick off. Earlier this week, when temperatures were warm, we had sporadic reports of fish eating dry flies — a promising sign that the bugs are starting to move. The recent cool weather has slowed that activity down a bit, but with warmer temps on the way later this week, expect dry fly action to ramp back up.
In the meantime, the nymph fishing has been excellent. Water clarity is outstanding, and the fish are getting noticeably more active on Green Drake nymphs and Salmon Fly nymphs. If you can get out in the next few days, you might just beat the dry fly crowds — and you’ll still find great fishing waiting for you.
Tactics: Nymphs Now, Dries Coming Fast
Keep a heavy nymph rig in hand for the time being — Green Drake nymphs and big Salmon Fly stonefly nymphs are your best producers right now. Have sizes 4 and 6 Pat’s Rubber Legs in the box, along with your favorite Green Drake nymph patterns. As temperatures climb later in the week, be ready to switch to dries. When the Green Drakes and Salmon Flies start popping, the fish won’t be shy about it.
