South Fork Fishing Report – Labor Day Weekend
After one of the driest summers on record, recent storms have brought a much-needed shift. Dr. Van Kirk at the Henry’s Fork Foundation noted that yesterday’s rainfall alone bumped us from the driest summer on record to the 4th driest—and more showers are in the forecast today. The cooler temps, clouds, and steady rain have guides, anglers, insects, and trout all breathing a sigh of relief.
On the water, the change has been noticeable. Cloud cover always helps, and anglers have had success with dry flies, streamers, and nymphs alike. Mutant Golden Stones are still in play and will stick around until our first good freeze, and terrestrials—hoppers, ants, and beetles—are also producing. Mayfly activity has picked up in the afternoons, with fish looking for well-placed PMDs, Mahogany Duns, and Blue-Winged Olives even when the bugs aren’t thick in the air.
Looking ahead, keep morning Mutant missions on your radar, along with evening caddis hatches and spinner falls. Midday, when the sun is bright and bug activity tapers off, a selection of small rubberlegs, PMD/BWO nymphs, and emergers will be your best bet.
With highs in the 80s instead of the 90s, it’s shaping up to be a great Labor Day weekend on the South Fork.
