Fishing Report
This week we chatted with guide Greg George to get our fishing report. Greg has been guiding on the South Fork of the Snake for 5 years, and has been with TLAPC for the last 4 of those years. Greg lives year round in Swan Valley spending his off season tying flies and fishing like any committed trout bum should! Greg is the epitome of “Good Natured” seemingly always in a good mood and ready to hit the water. To this end when I asked him if he had any favorite sayings or something he liked to mention to his clients he said “It’s ok to throw it in the bushes, it happens.”
I asked Greg how the fishing has been and he reported good fishing on all sections but has been doing really well in the Canyon. I asked him if he could go anywhere and fish this weekend where would he go he said “Right here!” I think that says a lot to how great the fishing is right now. You might still see just a few Salmon Flies left as they finish their run up the river near the dam but the focus has turned to the Golden Stones the smaller cousin of the Salmon fly that brings some the best and most consistent fishing of the summer. Anyone walking through the grass near the river from the Dam all the way to Menan has a good chance of seeing Golden Stones and the fish are looking for them! Imitations like stimulators or chernobyl ants work well when cast close to the bank and don’t forget to twitch em.
The PMD fishing remains very good as well and posting up in a riffle during the middle part of the day will yield results. Most of the larger fish will prefer a PMD emerger so rises and takes are subtle. The highly attentive and patient angler will catch more fish. If this isn’t enough for you there’s been some great caddis hatches in the evening hours and don’t be afraid to fish a caddis first thing in the morning as well…the fish remember them from the night before.
Thanks for checking out our fishing report this week, we have a few spots open for guided trips, Greg and the rest of our talented guide staff would love to show you around. The fly shop is also fully stocked with all the secret bugs so stop on by.
