South Fork of the Snake River Fishing Report 8/29/24

South Fork fly fishing guide netting a fish

A touch of Fall in the air this morning here in Swan Valley, it’s coming.  Flows were bumped up +400cfs yesterday to a flow of 8,400cfs.  This small bump shouldn’t affect the fishing.

With clear skies and increasing temperatures in the coming days it’s still cold drinks and flip flop weather.  We are in the middle of our transition from summer fishing; Mutant Golden Stones, Hoppers, Ants, PMD’s etc. to our fall fishing; Blue Winged Olives, Mahogany Duns, and Streamers.  Cold cloudy days will see the fall tactics prevail and with the current weather stick with summer strategies.

Your angling success and strategies can be timed with the time of day. If you’re an early riser then twitching and skating big foam in the morning hours to imitate the mutant golden stones should be on your radar.  In the middle of the day your best bet will be nymphing with a small rubber legs (to imitate the mutant stone nymphs) trailed with your favorite dropper.  You can also fish the banks with terrestrial patterns.  There are still a few PMD’s hatching mid-day so it’s worth checking out the riffles as well.  As the sun starts to leave the water streamers will come into play.

Enjoy this great weather and have fun on the river.
