With not much change in the flows (5,200 cfs from the dam), or the weather, the fishing report hasn’t changed much either. There are some clouds in the forecast today and tomorrow, at this point any clouds will help both the bugs and the fish. The long range weather forecast is looking promising for cooler weather and even some moisture a week or so away. In the meantime enjoy the last of the shorts and flip flops weather before we break out the puffy jackets and waders.
For the rest of this week I would focus on nymphing in the morning with Rubberlegs and small Baetis nymphs, there are a few Baetis and Mahogany Duns hatching each afternoon so keep your eyes peeled for rising fish in the flats, foam lines, and low down in riffles. Early morning and evening offer opportunities for streamers. Big foam isn’t dead but you’ll want a small Baetis dropper or soft hackle, probably about a foot deeper than you usually fish them. Keep in mind the fish aren’t holding in their summer spots as much, look for fish in flats, inside bends, and generally “softer” water than you’d find mid-summer.
The lodge will close for the weekend after this weekend, our Swan Valley fly shop will remain open, and we’ll have guided fishing trips available all winter. The fishing report will continue weekly the rest of this month and then “as needed” throughout the winter.
Have fun and see you out there.
