South Fork of the Snake River Fishing Report 5/8/2025

Flows on the South Fork have increased from 11,000 cfs on Tuesday morning to 13,000 cfs today. Palisades Reservoir currently sits at 68% capacity. The Bureau of Reclamation plans to have it at 100% by July 1st—setting us up for a great summer. This bump in flows makes what we’ve been discussing over the past few weeks even more important.

Whenever flows rise this time of year, the bins in the fly shop holding our various worm patterns mysteriously start to empty out. It’s no surprise—more water means more worms getting flushed into the system. While Blue-Winged Olives and midge patterns don’t offer much surface action right now, they’re present and the fish are eating them subsurface. Several of our guides reported this week that small black, brown, and dark olive nymphs representing BWOs and midges out-fished big rubberlegs and worms.

Don’t forget: with rainbows in their spring spawn, egg patterns can also be very effective. I remember fishing with my dad one day in May—my first guided trip of the season was the next day, so I was trying to dial in the fly selection. I stood in one of my favorite riffles with a stonefly, worm, egg, and a tungsten thread midge all tied on. Haha—I don’t recommend it, but I figured out what to fish!

The weather is looking fantastic through Saturday with some showers moving in on Sunday.  If you’re looking for a place to stay, a fishing guide, or both give us a call 208.483.2222.  Our Swan Valley Fly Shop is fully stocked for the season with anything and everything you need for a successful day on the river, including last minute fishing reports and tips.  Swing by or give the shop a call 208.483.2727.

See you on the river.
