The Lodge at Palisades Creek Fishing Report

September 4, 2025

Flows out of Palisades are sitting at 8,700 cfs, down from last week’s 10,700 cfs. That’s right on average for this time of year, and clarity remains excellent. When flows drop in early September, it usually signals more Mutant Golden Stones—so those dawn-patrol missions are well worth it, especially with the warm weather in the forecast today.

Weather & Timing

This time of year, weather has an outsized effect on fishing. Hot, sunny days like we’ve had this week push the bite to the early mornings and evenings. Looking ahead, cooler and possibly wet weather later this weekend could flip the switch to an entirely different fishery, with Blue Winged Olives, Mahogany Duns, and fish chasing streamers under cloudy skies.

Midday Technical Fishing

Expect bright conditions today through Saturday. That means technical fishing during the middle of the day—smaller flies, precise placement, and plenty of patience. Runs that produced half a dozen fish on Salmonflies or Green Drakes in July may now yield one picky trout, but bringing your “A” game makes it all the more rewarding. Slow down, study the water, and be ready to capitalize when a fish shows itself.

Fly Selection

Observation and creativity are key. Most quality fish on dries this week came after I saw them eat, not blind casting. Dig deep in your fly box—sometimes an oddball choice pays off. I dusted off some old hoppers and turned more fish than expected, simply because they were seeing something new. The same held true for a few beadheads I tied myself. When in doubt, try something they haven’t seen before.

Recommended Flies & Tactics

  • Early Morning (Dawn Patrol): Mutant Golden Stones, larger terrestrials, attractor nymphs

  • Midday (Bright & Sunny): Small terrestrials (ants, beetles), smaller beadhead nymphs, precise dry-dropper setups.  PMD’s and PMD emergers.

  • Cloudy/Cooler Weather: Blue Winged Olives, Mahogany Duns, streamers (especially under cloud cover)
