The annual Blackfoot Reservoir Carp Tournament went off without a hitch this weekend and those ravenous and rod-breaking carp were out in force. Each year, this tournament raises funds for local fishing folks and this years’ $3800 went to Lyle “Ooley” Piram for a hip replacement. Lodge teams included Josh who landed a 28.5 pound monster, Justin who landed a 23.4 pound giant and Jaason who wrangled a 21 pounder. Carp are fast becoming formidable game fish and once you have a 20-30 pounder on the end of your 7 or 8-weight rod, hang on. Sight fishing is the pinnacle with these “hillbilly tarpon” burping and rolling in the flats. Buggers, leaches and some variations tied by the guides were the ticket. If you have not wrestled one of these giants, you are in for a surprise.
