South Fork Fishing Report – October 2nd.
October is here, bringing cooler temps and much-needed fall rain. Starting tomorrow, expect classic autumn conditions that make both streamer junkies and dry-fly purists smile. Overcast skies and moisture will trigger afternoon hatches of Blue-Winged Olives and Mahogany Duns, while aggressive trout will be chasing streamers hard through the weekend.
Flows out of Palisades continue to drop, (5,660 cfs and dropping this morning) with irrigation demand winding down, opening up more riffles and wading opportunities. The river is in great shape and clarity is excellent.
Streamer anglers should work banks, side channels, and drop-offs with olive, black, and articulated patterns. On the surface, small BWO and Mahogany imitations fished in the afternoon will be effective—especially in softer seams and tailouts. Nymph droppers like a Tungsten Thread Midge, Psycho May, or Split Case BWO (sizes 16–20) will also produce.
This is the weather our guides and guests wait for all season. Pack a few extra layers, pour some hot coffee in the thermos, and get ready for one of the most rewarding times of year to fish the South Fork. See you on the water.
