Sunny skies and high temperatures in the 70’s are in the forecast well into next week. This makes for excellent “fishing” weather but the “catching” will probably slow when compared to this past weekend with the cooler cloudy weather. That being said the fishing on the South Fork has been good. The flows are down to 4,500 cfs and we will see them continue to come down this month. With Palisades reservoir at 10% capacity, we are keeping our eye on the water clarity but so far the river is looking good.
So what’s on the menu? Blue Winged Olive and Mahogany Duns will continue to hatch daily, with the sunny weather the numbers won’t be as high but the fish will be looking for these bugs in all lifecycle stages. Streamers will be effective early and late in the day when the sun is low or off the water. Don’t be afraid to probe soft water locations with terrestrials, droppers, and super sneaky dry flies like a rusty spinner, dry renegade, cinnamon ant etc. Sunny days in the Fall can be the most challenging but also the most rewarding for anglers who really put some thought and searching into their day.
Swing into our fly shop if you need anything. We’ve got a great Fall sale happening and are always willing to share the latest fishing news, hot flies, etc.
