Similar conditions exist this week as we saw last week — even a fall storm is on tap for the weekend. Flows out of Palisades have dropped to 3,700 cfs, which is typical for October. The lower flows are opening up plenty of excellent wading opportunities throughout the river. If you’re floating, keep in mind that your float will take longer than it does during mid-summer.
Afternoon hatches continue to feature Blue Winged Olives (BWOs) and Mahogany Duns, providing solid dry-fly fishing. Blue Wings can be tricky to see, so consider using an October Caddis as an indicator fly—it’s easy to track and often gets eaten, too.
Streamer fishing remains productive for anglers targeting aggressive fall brown trout. Overcast days and the early and late windows are your best bet for moving bigger fish.
Subsurface, small nymphs are producing the most consistent action. Patterns like tungsten midges, BWO nymphs, and other small mayfly imitations fished in riffles and drop-offs have been top producers.
