I think the stars are aligning for this weekend and coming week to be one of the best late winter fishing weeks of the season. Here’s why.
First, the weather forecast is looking dreamy with highs in the 40’s and plenty of sunshine so it will feel warmer. Second, the flow out of Palisades Reservoir has been bumped up to 4,000 cfs making floating a bit easier with plenty of wade fishing still accessible.
If you’ve got that early season itch to get out and fish things are looking good, especially when you consider with the above average snowpack the fishing might be tough during run-off, so why not get out and catch some fish while you can?
Standard winter flies and tactics will apply. Zebra midges, rubber legs, worms, and egg patterns round out the nymphing game. Don’t be afraid to throw streamers deep and slow in back eddies and even non-moving backwaters as they present themselves. I wouldn’t be surprised to see some small winter stones and midges that might get some fish looking up.
The Palisades boat ramp across from Buck’s gas station is open as is Spring Creek, aka The Bridge. That would make a nice day float. Access on the lower river is also good from Wolf Flat down.
