South Fork of the Snake River Fishing Report 3/6/2025

Brody Barrus holds a trout he caught while winter fly fishing on the South Fork of the Snake River.

I heard my first Red-Winged Black Bird this morning, a sure sign that Spring is just around the corner, though we’re currently under a Winter Storm Warning.  We had some nice weather last weekend and quite a few anglers took care of the cabin fever with some fishing, the weather this weekend looks to be a bit cooler but sunny.  The Idaho Fish & Game was nice enough to plow the boat ramps at the Dam, Husky’s, and Conant so there is some access clearing up on the river.  I would recommend bringing a tow strap, four wheel drive, and maybe some sand or kitty litter for traction on the icy ramps.

Snowpack is looking good at 107% above Palisades as of Monday. With Palisades Reservoir at 67% our water supply for the summer is in good shape.  Currently there is just 880cfs being released from the dam so there are a lot of wade fishing opportunities and if you decide to float pick a short stretch as you’ll be moving slow, and fishing slow.  You should focus most of your fishing efforts in deep slow moving pools where fish have a lot cover and don’t have to work hard.  Streamers fished deep and slow can inspire a grab but nymphing deep with midge patterns, San Juan Worms, and small Stoneflies is the most effective.

Our Swan Valley Fly shop is open 9 AM to 3 PM Thursday – Sunday and will open seven days a week starting in April.  If you have questions about the fishing, shuttles etc. come by tht shop or call 208.483.2727, for lodging and guided trips call 208.483.2222
