Alright, we’re kicking off our regularly scheduled fishing reports this week. We’ll be posting and emailing our weekly fishing report for the South Fork of the Snake every Thursday afternoon. If you’d like to sign up to receive the fishing report via email you can do so here.
The flows out of Palisades Reservoir have been on the rise this week, currently at about 5,500 cfs. The Bureau of Reclamation has a target of 6,000 cfs which they should hit this afternoon. The weather is looking really amazing right now and tomorrow, with cooler and wetter weather arriving for the weekend.
The water’s still running cold, so keep those streamers deep and your retrieves slow. Focus your efforts on slower moving stretches—don’t overlook frog water, either. Sloughs are also worth exploring; rowing or hiking back into them can produce some solid streamer follows.
Nymphs remain reliable with favorites like Rubberlegs, Tungsten Thread Midges, and now—with the bump in flows—worm patterns are becoming increasingly effective.
Keep an eye out for active midge hatches, some Blue Winged Olives, and maybe even a few Winter Stones. Warmer temps will mean more snowmelt, so expect some creeks like Pine and Palisades to throw a bit of color into the river.
We’ve got guides available for spring day trips & the lodge opens for the season on May 1st. — give us a call at 208.483.2222. The fly shop in Swan Valley is fully stocked and ready to help you gear up for your next mission. See you out there!
