The flows on the South Fork of the Snake have been stable at 9,000 cfs for about 24 hours. This is a bit higher than average but lower than a year ago. The water clarity is good, tributaries like Palisades Creek, Rainey Creek and Pine Creek have been off color but the cooler weather that has arrived should mitigate that. Rain and snow will continue into tomorrow, Saturday looks relatively warm, 49 degrees, and sunny, as the weekend goes on we’ll see rain and snow returning.
Water temps are quite cold so focusing your efforts on slow moving water will help you find fish. While stumbling across fish feeding on midges, winter stone flies, and blue winged olives is not out of the question your best bet will be double nymph rigs and streamers. Rubberlegs , worms, eggs, and midge patterns are good bets (it’s down and dirty time after all.) Streamers are always on the menu, just remember, the fish are sluggish this time of year so find that slow water, strip slow, and keep those flies deep.
