South Fork of the Snake River Fishing Report 5/11/2023

Fishing Guide Jesse Knox

Flows out of Palisades reservoir have nearly doubled in just the last couple of days from 4,500 cfs to about 8,800 cfs. Other than the increase in flows not much has changed since last week’s report.  Remember, don’t let the water bump scare you away from fishing the South Fork. These higher flows get the big fish ready to eat and we land just as many big fish (if not more) in May as we do any other month.  Those big fish are looking for big meals; stonefly nymphs, worms, eggs, and streamers.  The action may not be as fast as other times but those big fish are there if you keep at it.

Other considerations if you’re out on the river this weekend:

  • The water is cold.  Fish your streamers slowly.
  • As the flows increase the fish will “hide” from these faster flows on eddy lines, behind structure, etc.
  • The weather is looking fantastic this weekend.  Keep your eyes peeled for midges and if they’re around trail your San Juan Worm or Rubberlegs with a Zebra Midge in black, brown, or olive size 18 or 20.
  • Have fun and be safe.
