It seems quite often that I’m writing this fishing report for the weekend fishing forecast and today (Thursday) would be the day to fish.. (insert shrug emoji) The forecasted high temperature today is a whopping 83 degrees. These temperatures will help warm the water and get the fish even more active. If nothing else it will be a very pleasant day today on the river. Tomorrow’s forecast looks ok with a high of 76 and a 40% chance of showers. For the weekend warriors (myself included) rain and much cooler temperatures prevail all the way through Memorial Day. If you’ve lived in Idaho long enough you know that rain and snow are pretty typical for Memorial Day weekend.
Weather aside the outlook for fly fishing on the South Fork of the Snake River this weekend is great. The fishing has been very good this week and with a whole bunch of anglers targeting the Salmon Flies on the Henry’s Fork the South Fork is a great option for good fishing and fewer crowds.
Nymphs and Streamers will be pretty much your only options as we are still several weeks away from seeing our first significant hatches. Two fly nymph rigs with a Rubberlegs trailed by an Egg or a San Juan Worm is pretty standard right now. Streamers will also perform well. I would keep two rods rigged, one for nymphs and one for streamers. The water is still on the cold side so keep those streamers deep and slow.
If you need any flies or gear swing by our Swan Valley shop next to the new gas station or give us a call with questions 208.483.2727. The shop will be open all weekend 9:00 – 3:00.
Have a great weekend, stay safe, and we hope you catch a big one.
