South Fork of the Snake River Fishing Report 7/1/21

Perfect fishing and perfect weather continue as we head into the big 4th of July holiday weekend.  If you’ve been out on the South Fork this week you know how great things are and if you haven’t been out you need to get out there.

Dry fly fishing abounds on the lower river and the Green Drakes are leading the charge well up into section 3, closely followed by the famous Salmon Flies that will probably be appearing in the canyon (section 2) today and certainly by the weekend.  You’ll also find PMD’s, Caddis, and Little Yellow Sallies. The water is still just a bit cold on the upper river but it’s certainly possible we’ll see dry fly action on the “upper” before the holiday weekend is out.  Nymphing on the upper river has been excellent this week an “indicator” that dry flies are coming soon.

The flow out of Palisades Dam is cold, clear, and steady at 13,600 cfs.  The reservoir currently sits at 84% capacity.

If you’re headed out this weekend you’re sure to find good fishing and plenty of other anglers.  Pack your favorite flies and patience.  I would highly consider fishing the “margins” of the hatch and or the day.  For example, floating below the bulk of the Salmon Fly hatch (Lorenzo to Menan) or launching early or late in the day.  Anglers who think outside the box a bit will be rewarded on busy weekends.

We’ve got all the gear, flies, advice, and shuttle help you might need at either fly shop here in Swan Valley.  Our new fly shop located next to the new grocery store in Swan Valley is open seven days a week including the 4th and 5th of July.  Come see us!
