Thanks for checking in on our weekly fly fishing report for the South Fork of the Snake. Fishing remains very good on the river and with some clouds and showers in the forecast I expect the fishing to get even better at times in the coming days. The Salmon Flies have all but wrapped for the year with Golden Stones taking their place in the big foam category. PMD’s and Caddis are rounding out the fishing with great mid-day riffle action on the PMD’s and Caddis in the evenings and early mornings.
Palisades reservoir sits at 83% capacity with an outflow of 9,500 cfs. With some waters in Yellowstone National Park and Montana closing due to warm water it’s a reminder of how lucky we are to have the reservoir creating cool conditions for our fish. You can see from the chart below and by visiting this link via the Henry’s Fork Foundation and their South Fork Project that the water temps on the upper river haven’t hit 60 degrees yet.
The river has been busy so thinking a bit outside the box will benefit your fishing experience. If you avoid the standard 9-5 protocol of most anglers you’ll already be one step ahead. Consider an early morning float twitching Golden Stones or throwing streamers or a late evening float for Caddis and Spinner Fall.
Of note this next week the BLM has contracted work to pave the boat launches at the dam and Palisades (Husky). The dam is scheduled for July 29th -Aug 3rd with Palisades just after. We’ll keep you updated on those dates as we learn more.
Have fun out on the river this weekend. If you have any questions or need any flies or gear before you head out give Brody a call or stop in. Our Swan Valley Fly Shop is right next to the new gas station in Swan Valley. 208.483.2727
