We’re in the heart of summer here in Snake River Country, and the river is giving us plenty to talk about. Flows have bumped up slightly from 12,100 to 12,300 cfs this week (average for the date is 9,600 cfs), and water clarity is exceptional.
This week, let’s break things down by technique so you can make the most of your time on the water.
Streamers
If you’re a streamer angler, it’s always streamer season. Right now, the best windows are early mornings, just before dark, and even after dark. Will they work mid-day? Sure—but bright sun can slow the bite. If you commit to it and target deep holes, shady banks, and structure under overhanging willows, you might not out-fish everyone, but odds are you’ll stick the biggest trout of the day.
Nymphs
On these hot, sunny afternoons, you’ll notice a lot of guides running two nymphs under an indicator—and for good reason. These guys have been on the water daily and know where the fish are holding. If the fish won’t rise, they’ll go down and get them.
A small Rubberlegs (to imitate a Golden Stone or Mutant Golden Stone) trailed with a dropper is a proven setup. Productive droppers include Duracells, Perdigons, and Tungsten Pheasant Tails in sizes 14–18.
Dry Flies
We’re seeing our first Mutant Golden Stones of the season. These nocturnal bugs hatch at night and in the first light of morning, skittering like crazy across the surface. Get the boat in the water early, twitch your favorite big foam pattern, and hang on. For the most explosive takes, work gravel bars in 8–20 inches of water.
Other patterns worth having in the box: Hoppers, Ants, Beetles, PMDs, and Caddis.
Enjoy Your River Time
Whether you’re chasing the early-morning mutant bite, dredging deep nymph rigs, or swinging meat after dark, there’s something for every angler this week. Need flies, gear, or just some local insight? Give us a call or swing by the shop—we’re happy to help. Tight lines!
