South Fork of the Snake River Fishing Report 9/18/25

Henry Winkler fishing with The Lodge at Palisades Creek. Nice Brown Henry!

South Fork Fishing Report – The Lodge at Palisades Creek

The flip-flop and board-shorts weather rolls on, and it’s hard to complain—it’s just beautiful out there. The tradeoff, of course, is that while the fishing is pleasant, the catching can be a little slower than on cool, cloudy days. Is that a bad deal? Well, that depends on the angler. If you’re willing to exchange a few less fish for sunshine on your back and warm weather on the oars, this report is for you.

River Conditions

Flows on the South Fork are holding steady at 8,000 cfs, and clarity is excellent.

Tactics & Flies

Nymphing remains the most consistent approach. Try:

  • A rubberlegs trailed by a small bead head

  • Two small bead heads

  • A bead head followed by a soft hackle

Patterns producing well this week include:

  • Tungsten Thread Midges

  • Cracked Back BWO’s

  • Soft Hackle BWO’s

  • Harrop’s Mahogany Captive Dun

Fishing right now is technical—much more like a classic tailwater than what many expect from the South Fork. The fish are there and they’re eating, but they’re selective. That means longer leaders, smaller technical flies, quiet wading, and sharp observation will pay dividends.

Pro Tips

  • Don’t overlook “nothing water”—fish may be feeding at the very tail of a run or in flat water that looks empty.

  • If you come across a nice run or pool, take the time to sit, watch, and wait before firing casts.

  • In deeper pools with foam lines, watch carefully for surface activity before casting dries; if no fish are showing, switch to nymphs and emergers.

This time of year rewards anglers who bring skill and patience. Guides love it because knowledge built over the whole season finally comes into play. The reward? More meaningful fish in the net.
